Three passions hav governed my life: D longing for love,d search for knowledge, and unbearable pity 4d suffering of humankind. Love brings ecstasy n relieves loneliness. In the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature d prefiguring vision Of the heavens dat saints and poets have imagined. With unequal passion av sought knowledge. I hav wished 2 understand the hearts of people. I hav wished 2 know why d stars shine. Love and knowledge led upwards to d heavens, but always pity brought me back to earth: Cries of pain reverberated in dis big heart, of children in famine, of victims tortured and of old people left helpless. I long to alleviate d evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life: I hav found it worth living!
